While the 2nd Gen Toyota Tundra (2007-2013) is one of the best full size offroad platforms going, the rear bumper and hitch receiver pose some big limitations from the factory. The rear bumper is bulky yet flimsy - it will crumple from even a light hit offroad, it protrudes several inches rearwards away from the tailgate, and the hitch receiver hangs way down. These factors give the Tundra a much worse departure angle than it should. However, we feel that many Tundra owners (myself included!) want to achieve these performance gains without needing to cut their truck's bedsides or make any permanent modifications.
When checking what else was available for Tundra offroad rear bumper options, we were shocked to find that nearly every other option keeps the factory hitch receiver in place and simply bolts onto the same mounting points that the flimsy stock bumper uses. These factors make for a bumper that is more ornamental than functional, and gives you absolutely no increase in ground clearance or departure angle. It quickly became clear that we had to provide the Tundra community with a true offroad bumper that does away with the factory hitch receiver and mounts directly to the frame - something with legitimate recovery points and a massive increase in ground clearance. Our solution is the 2nd Gen Tundra High Clearance Rear bumper you see here. For this bumper, we came up with a unique profile that is super slim across the back and then tapers the side wings downwards to flow into the uncut factory bedside. When it comes to steep ditch crossings, hill climbs and the like, this design gives you nearly all the ground clearance benefits of a bedside-cut bumper... without cutting the bedside! With no exaggeration, this bumper will transform the offroad capability of your Tundra.
Being a fullsize truck, the Tundra's factory hitch receiver is a heavy unit that bolts to the vehicle's frame behind AND in front of the rear leaf spring hangers. Instead of taking the easy route and only mounting our bumper to the available mounting points at the rear tip of the frame, we wanted to exceed the mounting strength of the factory hitch by using all the frame mounting points possible. To achieve this, we use a our own custom 1/4" steel brackets that wrap around the leaf spring hangers and span over 24" of the Tundra frame's length. No one else is doing this and its probably overkill. But the Tundra is a seriously tough truck and we wanted an extremely strong and stiff bumper that will not flex or shift during hard impacts or recovery point pulls. This design also relieves stress from your Tundra's frame by distributing those forces over such a large section of the frame.
The profile of this bumper has been designed with maximum ground clearance and departure angles put first. The bumper profile is only 3.25" tall underneath the tailgate and the side wings hug tight to the Tundra's uncut bedside corners. In addition, the recessed hitch receiver and angled lower side wing faces will smoothly slide over obstacles and ensure you do not get hung up on the trail. These features make a very noticeable difference during deep ditch crossing and steep obstacle climbs where other aftermarket bumpers with bulky rear profiles and protruding hitch receivers will hang up and impede your progress on the trail. Simply put, this bumper allows you to forget about the departure angle of your Tundra!
Unlike many aftermarket bumpers that are more or less empty shells with minimal reinforcement, this bumper is fully boxed in on the backside and contains extensive internal gusseting. The main section of this bumper is formed from a single piece of 3/16" steel that we form in-house. This center section has slots and tabs cut into it that then lock into all of the surrounding plates. This makes for foolproof fitment of each part as they will only fit together in one possible way. This greatly reduces the amount of welding and grinding time required by you and makes for a cleaner finished product. If you are paying to have the bumper assembled by a welding shop, this significantly lowers the cost.
Another unique yet highly functional feature of this bumper is the integrated tie-down point we've added inside each side wing. Slide-in campers are great for going offroad, but they often require you to run vulnerable tie down bars which hang way below your vehicle and can easily get bent or damaged while offroad. With this rear bumper, we've placed a camper tie down point inside each side wing, giving you all the vehicle protection of a dedicated offroad bumper while also keeping your tie down point out of harms way. This also saves you the cost and hassle of purchasing stand alone camper tie down bars to fit your Tundra. Our tie down points come in the form of a reinforced section of bumper with a 1/2"-13 nut welded inside. You then add the matching 1/2" threaded eyelet of your choice, which are available at nearly any hardware store and come in many different lengths and eyelet diameters to suit your exact setup.
We finished this bumper off with optional single and dual swing out carriers, a high clearance hitch receiver, LED pod lights to go on top of the bumper or swing outs (sorry, this bumper is way too low profile to fit lights inside of it!), and heavy duty 3/4" thick recovery points that are placed directly in line with the Tundra frame to eliminate any leveraging effects. These recovery points are formed out of laser cut steel plates that pass through the CNC-cut slots in the bumper center section and tie directly into the bumper's main mounting points on the Tundra frame. The recovery points then get welded to the in and outside of the bumper center section. These factors all combine to form recovery points that minimize stress on your Toyota Tundra's frame and provide reliable recoveries of heavily loaded vehicles in the worst of offroad situations. What could make this bumper even better? The low profile design has resulted in a very reasonable weight of 111.4lbs! Considering that this bumper replaces your factory bumper and hitch receiver (136lbs in total!), there is actually a weight savings of 24.6lbs to your Tundra. This reduces added stress on your vehicle, maintains precious payload capacity, and allows you to keep your existing leaf springs if desired.
The swing out tire carrier comes in either a single or dual sided configuration and is built to accept a tire up to <strong>37" in diameter! </strong>Both carriers include mounting brackets for a hilift jack and other recovery items. The dual swing out includes the hilift mount as well as a lockable jerry can holder designed to fit two 20L NATO style jerry cans. These carriers feature heavy duty chromoly heim joint hinges, 2000lb toggle latches, T-handle spring pins, and a replaceable UHMW catch pad that provides secure, rattle free operation. The heim joints in conjunction with the toggle latch provide tons of adjustability, allowing for easy assembly and guaranteed alignment of the carrier latch. The single swing out add-on weighs 34lbs and the dual swing out add-on with gas can holder weighs 77lbs.
Don’t want to lose your factory parking sensor system? No problem. This bumper kit can be ordered with CNC-cut outs for each of your 2 or 4 factory parking sensors. Simply pop the sensors into this replacement bumper, route the factory harness through the internal ports, and plug it back into the vehicle. The factory wiring harness is easily removed from the stock bumper and transferred to the Coastal Offroad bumper with no modifications needed.
•DIY Weld-together kit - This bumper arrives as precision CNC-laser cut and bent pieces that you then weld together (detailed assembly instructions included)
• Ultra Slim profile is engineered to provide maximum ground clearance and complement the factory body lines WITHOUT requiring any bedside cutting or vehicle modifications - the total height of the bumper is only 3.25" underneath the Tundra's tailgate.
• Heavy duty 3/16" plate steel construction for maximum offroad strength and durability
• Integrated 2" hitch receiver is recessed into the bumper shell for a clean look and further clearance gains (<strong>While the hitch is very well reinforced, we cannot rate it for on-road towing due to the DIY welding nature of this kit)</strong>
•Integrated 1/2" Tie-down mounts are reinforced internally and give you a very strong frame-mounted tie-down point for slide-in campers or other heavy loads in the bed.
•Mounts directly to frame using 14 mounting factory points for unbeatable strength - No drilling or modification required.
•Reinforced 3/4" thick clevis mounts allow the use of 3/4" D-Rings and pull directly off of the frame for confident recoveries of heavily loaded vehicles
•All kits ship as clean, bare metal that is ready to weld out of the box - the Nitrogen laser cutting technology means no cutting edge oxidation and thus easier and stronger welds
•Optional Single and Dual Swing out carriers with spare tire mount, hilift jack mount and locking dual NATO can holder (dual swing out only)
